Four Hawley High School students advanced and won VASE 09 this year. The Visual Arts Scholastic Event/VASE was held at the University of Houston Clear Lake in Houston, TX on April 18, 2009. Three of the students and their art works got perfect scores! The VASE competition started with over 20,000 entries across the state of Texas. Only 1,700 of these art works advanced to the state level. These numbers included all Texas schools Division I - V and all magnet art schools in the state.
The Hawley students that received a gold medal and State recognition were Meghan Chrismer, Austin Chapman, Kelly Harris, and Shalisa Sites. Meghan created the duct tape dress design sculpture, Austin welded and constructed the human anatomy sculpture, Kelly welded the industrial chair sculpture, and Shalisa drew a reflected self portrait with charcoal.
This is the eleventh year that Hawley students have participated and placed in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event/ VASE. Congratulations to Meghan, Austin, Kelly and Shalisa for winning and representing Hawley High School at the State level.

Art is an academic course. It is a consecutive learning process. What is learned today is vital to what is learned tomorrow. Class work consists of thinking skills, design problems, drawing, painting, ceramics and some sculpture. Students will be required to follow set guidelins and procedures.
